Paddling on the Ely from CIWW is only at times negotiated with CIWW by the club unless separate CIWW licences are purchased. Paddling is undertaken at your own risk. Just because there is a club session taking place does not mean that it is safe for everyone to take part. You should assess the weather and water conditions related to your own padding ability and the boat you are using before going out.
Under 16s are welcome to join and take part in Club activities, but they must at all times be supervised by an approved responsible adult, including whilst on the water.
It is assumed that all paddlers are able to swim. The wearing of buoyancy aids for adults is optional but if you are at all uncertain as to your abilities they are recommended, especially when the water is cold or in the dark. Buoyancy aids for juniors in coached sessions may be compulsory.
Water quality in the Ely varies from being fairly clean to dilute sewage depending mainly upon recent heavy rainfall. Assume it’s dirty and wash your hands as soon as possible after paddling. Cardiff Harbour Authority daily water quality report can be found here.
There is at times considerable motor boat traffic on the Ely which can cause significant washes. The rule of the road on the river is keep to the right. If in doubt keep close to a bank especially if any of the water buses are moving.
Currently the club runs three training squads, each with specific entry requirements. Paddlers or parents should consult a coach to discuss which one might be suitable.
